| This skit, to me, is a great example of how brilliant Walter Stemple is. He had read this skit to me, a rough draft of it, some time back...and I thought it was creative, it was fun. I think it was kind of in its infancy stages, because it didn't
quite get me the same way the finished version of Lancelot Airways did. And let me say, this skit is not only one of the best written, but also kind of the best produced that I've ever heard from any of the T. Bob Tubb skits. It moves fast, I love the fact that Walter actually kind of increased the tone of his voice of
the voiceover, as the stewardess, or, if you will, the male stewardess...it makes the skit itself move a little faster (Duh!! -- Ed.). I think W. Upton Downs is a perfect pilot...in fact, even though he has absolutely no clue whatsoever how to fly, I would let him be my pilot, you know, crossing the Atlantic or whatever.
That's how good his acting is. One of my favorite lines in this is actually right in the beginning, and I don't know why this cracks me up so much, but...it's where the pilot just is giving his introductions, and you can just picture yourself on the plane here, listening to the pilot give the introductions, and you here himself say "Oh, goddam it..." and, just, you know, what would you think as a passenger? And, you have to ask yourself, what is it that's actually going wrong with the aircraft that's making the pilot react this way? For some reason, the change between narration voices in the video really cracks me up, and it really works. And I can't really identify why it works. It seems kind of random, I don't understand what Stemple and Downs were thinking when they made that switch. But, if you've ever seen a real airline safety video, that's what they really do! It's so great! And the music just makes it. Talking with Walter, you can tell how pleased he is with the music. And, of course, how can you not love the Lancelot motto? "In theory, we're safer than driving!" That's so classic! My hat goes off to Walter and Up. |
