Serendipity bred this artistic hobby of mine, with a combination of keeping the shutter open too long and failed to hold the camera steady at the right time. The result was a beautiful trail of lights, and I kept experimenting, marvelling at the beauty of the patterns, shapes and colors presented.
I decided to try arranging the various shots I had, and trying to produce individual "art works" by assembling them with others I felt matched; it was like a colorful puzzle, of sorts: one in which the light streams seemed to build off each other to create one large image. Thus, each of the above pieces are composed of separate shots and present an experimental angle on what we see every day.
Individually, each photo can be admired for its vibrancy, but it was my hope that my choices in their arrangements would offer a new compositional quality.
How I did this:
I used what I call a "whirlygig:" one of those battery-powered toys that lights up and spins...you might get one at the circus or the fair. I suspended it from a stand, turned it on, and the spinning motion caused the toy to wobble on its string.
I then turned out the lights and experimented with shooting the spinning device at various shutter speeds. I also changed angles and distance, to varying results. It was fascinating to see the different patterns and color combinations I got from a simple array of red, yellow and blue LEDs.
